The inscription reads in translation 'Seal of Amadeus, Count of Savoy and Marquess III of Italy'
Amadeus III, Count of Savoy (1095-1148) is also known as 'The Crusader'. In 1147 he accompanied his nephew Louis VII of France and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine on the Second Crusade. Having crossed into Anatolia, Amadeus, who was leading the vanguard, become separated from Louis near Laodicea resulting in the almost entire destruction of Louis' forces. On the return journey to Antioch Amadeus fell ill on Cyprus and died at Nicosia in April 1148
