A Spanish Left-Hand Dagger
Late 17th Century

With sharply tapering single-edged blade of triangular section deeply notched and bordered by a line of dots along the back beneath the broad ricasso, the latter recessed for the thumb on one side, pierced with a hole for sword-breaking, decoratively cusped along one edge and chiselled with foliage, one side involving a crowned double-headed eagle, hilt comprising triangular hand-guard with turned and notched edge, a guardapolvo on the inside pierced and chiselled with foliage inhabited by a further crowned double-headed eagle, straight quillons of circular section each with fluted button terminal, foliate engraved compressed bun-shaped pommel with button, and grip with twisted steel wire and crimped copper ribbon between vertically fluted iron collars (some light pitting)
