A Rare Iranian Mace Head
Saljuq, 12th/14th Century
Saljuq, 12th/14th Century
Of copper alloy, of octagonal section fluted to form eight shallow triangular flanges (one damaged), each flange engraved with a panel of arabesques on both sides, the spaces between engraved with a vertical design of foliage, domed finial surmounted by an iron cap and engraved en suite with the flanges around the base, and circular socket (split) engraved with a row of diamond-shaped and circular florets above and below a central moulding engraved with a line of ropework, the base with contemporary copper reinforcing strap (incomplete)
