A Cup-Hilt Rapier In Spanish Late 17th Style, And A Fencing Foil
Both 19th Century

The first with sharply tapering blade (pointed detached) of flattened hexagonal section incised 'Toledo 1580' within the fuller on both sides of the forte, hilt with straight spirally twist quillons, deep cup extending up to form a knuckle-guard and pierced with converging vertical lines of ovals, the knuckle-guard chiselled with a crowned lion rampant on a shield, a further crown and close-helmet above, globular pommel chiselled with grotesque masks, and wire-bound wooden grip; the second with blade of sharply tapering hollow triangular section etched with foliated strapwork at the forte against a gilt ground, shallow cup-guard and faceted pommel etched with foliage en suite, and cord-bound leather-covered grip (both worn and rust patinated overall) (2)
