An 1857 Pattern Royal Engineers Officer's Presentation Sword
By Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, No. 9268 For 1858

With slightly curved fullered blade etched with symmetrical designs of foliage over half its length on each side, one side involving crowned 'VR' cypher above crossed branches of palm and olive, and on the other with the presentation inscription, regulation brass hilt pierced with foliage and retaining traces of gilding, and wire-bound fishskin-covered grip, in its steel scabbard (some pitting) with two rings for suspension

The presentation inscription reads: 'Presented To Gentleman Cadet Richard H.B. Beaumont On Obtaining His Commission From The Royal Military Academy June 1858, For His Exemplary Conduct While At The Institution'

Richard Henry Beaumont was promoted to Captain on 19 June 1872. The following year he commanded the 28th Company of Royal Engineers, Aldershot and was promoted to Major in December 1875. In 1880 he was in command of the 36th Company Royal Engineers at Chatham and became honorary Lieutenant Colonel on 1 July 1881. He retired in 1882 and died in 1884
