A Mameluke Hilted Sabre
By Harman & Co., Calcutta, Late 19th Century

With slightly curved bright blade double-edged at the clipped-back point and etched over most of its length on both sides with symmetrical designs of foliage involving a martial trophy on one side and crowned 'VR' cypher on the other, gilt-mounted hilt comprising guard with lobed quillons and cast and chased with foliage on each side against a stippled ground, pommel-cap en suite and pierced for a sword-knot, and ivory grips (minor splits) with two gilt floret-shaped rivet heads on each side, in its gilt scabbard embossed and chased overall with repeated designs of foliage en suite with the hilt, scrolled shoe, and two rings for suspension
