A Caucasian Shasqua
Late 19th Century

With curved single-edged blade double-edged at the point (extreme tip missing) and cut with two slender fullers along the back-edge for most of its length on each side, the forte on one side etched with a panel of symmetrical arabesques framing an Imperial eagle between the inscription 'Zlatoust Arms Factory' in Russian, and on the other with a similar panel framing the owner's gold- and silver-damascened monogram, characteristic hilt encased in nielloed silver embossed and chased with scrolling foliage in low relief against a finely punched ground within beaded borders, and with applied red enamelled gilt-brass (worn and damaged) Order of St. Anne fourth class on one side of the pommel, in original black leather-covered wooden scabbard with silver locket, chape (split) and suspension mounts all en suite with the hilt, and with leather strap with nielloed silver mounts
