A Turkish Brass-Mounted Kilij
19th Century

With broad curved blade (some rust staining and pitting) of characteristic form damascened with a panel of gold foliage on both sides at the yelman, the back of the blade chiselled with a medial line interrupted by gold-damascened decoration, the forte damascened in gold on both sides with a symmetrical design of foliage terminating in cartouche-shaped panels containing Turkish inscriptions, hilt comprising faceted quillon-block with pointed langets and tapering quillons with bud-shaped terminals, brass grip-strap, and rounded dark horn grips, the pommel flattened on each side and pierced for a sword-knot, in original wooden scabbard covered in black leather with deep locket and chape, suspension mount en suite with the quillon-block, and ring for suspension (the other missing)
