An Indian Tulwar And Circular Steel Dhal
Late 19th/20th Century

The first with curved blade double-edged towards the point and chiselled over nearly its entire length on each side with animals attacking each other, the animals including elephants, tigers, antelope and rams, characteristic iron hilt decorated overall with silver-damascened foliage against a punched ground and comprising blunt langets, button quillons, large disc-shaped pommel with pointed finial on a dome with rayed border, and swelling grip of flattened oval section, in later velvet-covered scabbard; the second of convex form, with four later domed steel bosses, the centre chiselled with a mustachioed Indian head within a rayed border and encircled by further borders of tigers attacking various prey and elephants, the scenes in landscapes and within slender borders of running foliage, the interior with padded textile liner (some damage) (2)
