A Pair Of Processional Standards ('Alam) In Persian Safavid Style

Of steel, each of broad tapering form rounded at the base and rising to a cartouche-shaped finial, the outer face incised with gold- and silver-damascened Qu'ranic inscriptions within cartouche-shaped panels, the inner face incised at the base with further silver-damascened inscriptions, each with two tubular plume-holders secured by rivets, and silver-damascened iron mounts comprising a tubular border on each side rising to a monster-head terminal, and threaded tangs extending to form an oval on each side enclosing a gold-damascened Qu'ranic inscription on one side and three incised and silver-damascened kneeling figures on the other (some wear and rust patination); together with a pair of brass a'lams, each cast and pierced with a star and crescent between foliage, decorated over each side with engraved flowering foliage against punched grounds, the crescents each engraved with a Qu'ranic inscription against punched grounds, and another of copper, the rounded base rising to a bifurcated blade-shaped finial flanked by a pair of hands (5)
