A German Horseman's Hammer
Probably Saxon, Late 16th/Early 17th Century

Of iron, with hammer-head of waisted rectangular section cut with waved lines and balanced by a beak-shaped fluke of diamond section, block-shaped socket with button finial, slender writhen haft of tapering circular section cut with waved lines and struck with an indistinct mark above the baluster moulding at the base, disc-shaped hand-guards, the upper one with trefoil-shaped 'sword-breaker', the lower one with waved border and button terminal, swelling belt hook cut with two horizontal waved lines, and cord-bound leather-covered wooden grip
60 cm.
