A Basket-Hilted Broadsword
The Hilt Mid-18th Century

With later tapering double-edged blade (artificially pitted) cut with three central fullers on both sides at the forte, incised with two man-in-the-moon marks and inscribed 'Andrea Farara' twice beyond, iron guard (some rust patination) of line engraved fluted bars of rectangular section framing fretted incised panels pierced with stylised hearts and circles, the side panels each with 'ram's horn' terminal pierced with a stylised heart, and with an oval aperture for reins, fluted conical pommel, and spirally-grooved fishskin-covered grip bound with twisted copper wire between Turk's heads

Very similar hilts are in the Marishal Museum, University of Aberdeen and appear to have been used by the British Cavalry and are of the type particularly associated with the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards.
