signed 'HELEN BRADLEY' and with fly insignia (lower left); and inscribed 'Going for a walk before bedtime...warm Summer Evening Mother would/say, "Children, its too nice to go to bed, let/us get our hats on, and go for a walk,"./The country behind Grandpa's was mainly/farms and country Lanes, Lovely Cottages and/lots of trees. The aunts and miss Carter (who/wore pink) and also Mr Taylor (The Bank Manager)/always came with us. Mother said that she liked/Mr Taylor when he walked with us, because he always/had his stick with him, because we never knew/what we might meet. It might be cows or a horse,/but tonight it was Geese which hissed and looked/very fierce, but he shooed them away and the year was 1907.' (on two labels attached to the backboard)

Footnotes

Within Helen Bradley's recurring cast of Edwardian characters Miss Carter (who wore Pink) lives near the Aunts (Charlotte, Edith, Frances and Mary). Her parents and brother have died leaving her with 'private means'. She has set her sights on Mr. Taylor, the widowed bank manager (who sends all the ladies into a flutter), and is trying to manoeuvre him into a proposal of marriage. Everyone is in awe of Miss Carter because she dresses in the latest fashions, created for her in Manchester (Ina Taylor, Helen Bradley's Lancashire, Halsgrove, Bolton, 2002, p.21).

The 29 May sale was the departments most successful auction to date making almost £5m.
Furthermore, it was 90% sold by value with some staggering results achieved for fresh, competitively priced material sourced from private collections. Over half of sold lots soared above their high estimates, indicating that Bonhams is best positioned to secure the best price for your Modern British & Irish Art.
The variety on offer within this genre continues to delight buyers, proven by exceptional results for post-war masters such as Auerbach, Scully, Hockney and Freud whilst the early-mid century examples by Spencer, Lavery, Burra and Moore also exceeded expectation. We were proud to break our own world auction record twice over in the same sale for a pencil drawing by L.S. Lowry. Agecroft Regatta sold for £211,250, pipping The Organ Grinder (£151,250) to the title. The sculpture and Irish content were similarly contended for by the packed saleroom and busy telephones.
The cover lot Garden Path, Cookham Rise by Sir Stanley Spencer fetched an impressive £769,250 while the much admired Oil-bound Puffin by Lucian Freud commanded £385,250 on the day, with both returning to private collections.

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
