PROVENANCE:
With The Plaitford House Gallery, Romsey, Hampshire, where acquired by the present owners, 18 June 1976

For her depictions of horses at work, in pursuit or at rest Lucy Kemp-Welch is considered amongst the greatest British painters of equine life in the period straddling the turn of the last century. She dedicated herself to her art, studying her subject through exhaustive field sketches and oil studies in every manor of location in order to hone her ability.

Born in Bournemouth, she studied under Hubert von Herkomer and in later years took the reins of the art school he established in Bushey. Exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy from 1895 to 1949, Kemp-Welch was a vivacious woman commanding great respect amongst her peers and in a male dominated genre of sports painting often outshone her gentleman counterparts.
