PROVENANCE:
With Galerie Valentien, Stuttgart
With James Wray & Co., Belfast

McDonnell studied art in Munich and Vienna in 1965-66. Since then he has travelled extensively in Africa, Asia and the United States and has exhibited frequently in Ireland, London, Germany, France, Spain and New York. The underlying subject matter of his work is a concern for people, places, local habitats and ways of life.

The present work depicts a view towards the site of the September 11th World Trade Centre tragedy. The artist often focuses on the relationship between people and their experience of traumatic events. As a part-time New Yorker himself, he has sensitively described a moment in time here after the chaos, where people quietly survey the aftermath, the sun shines in a blue sky and an NYPD cop gazes up at a Broadway sign – there is a sense of resilience and hope.
