Jaques Bastard. A fine and rare late 17th century gilt metal consular case pocket watch with enamel case back and inside
Circa 1675
Gilt brass full plate fusee verge movement with pierced and engraved balance cock, silver regulation, gilt champlevé dial with Roman hour chapter, single steel hour hand, engraved centre, gilt hinged case with engraved bezels, porcelain case back, possibly depicting the allegorical story of the 'Cupid restoring the torch of Hymen,' the inside porcelain with an avenue of trees, movement signed 51mm.

In Greek mythology, Hymen was a God of marriage ceremonies, inspiring feasts and song. The God was supposed to preside over every wedding. If he did not, then the marriage would supposedly prove disastrous.
