Footnotes

There is a different spelling of 'John Thompson' of York mentioned in Baillie, free between 1633-1692, who made a 'fine silver watch and filigree outer case, champlevé silver dial' and was a goldsmith.

Filigree is a delicate kind of jewellery metalwork, usually of gold or silver, made with tiny beads or twisted threads, or both in combination, soldered together or to the surface of an object of the same metal and arranged in artistic motifs.
It often suggests lace and was popular in Italian and French metalwork from 1660 to the late 19th century.

Filigree pocket watch cases of this date are particularly rare.
