Footnotes
'Wuhu,' an area of the southeastern Anhui province of the Republic of China, was an area of great military conflict between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan from 1937 to 1941. This conflict was prelude to the battle of Nanking and Nanking massacre. 'The Yangtze Patrol,' in action from 1854 to 1941, was a prolonged naval operation to protect American interests in the Yangtze River's treaty ports. As the Japanese stormed in the city, various river gun boats previously stationed to protect American citizens were called into action. The USS Panay incident was the first loss of a US Navy vessel in the conflict which would escalate to the Second World War.
