Footnotes
Similar types of watches were used by the Royal Geographical society. The late 19th century was a period of great exploration, and the extreme climates gave rise to a class of hermetically sealed watches often nicknamed, 'explorers' watches.' A cap enclosing the crown was screw threaded onto the end of the pendant to seal the gap between stem and case, usually with a leather or cork washer to seal.
