English private collection of an academic, acquired between 1950-1975.

Literature:
Marcus Antonius Gordianus, the teenage emperor Gordian III, (b. 20 January 225, d. 11 February 244), He was proclaimed emperor during A.D.238 the Year of the Six Emperors, following the deaths of his grandfather Gordian I and uncle Gordian II. He ruled from 238 to 244, dying at the age of nineteen in Zaitha, Mesopotamia. There is a similar portrait head in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Rome (Inv. no. MC 995).
