A Roman marble torso of Silvanus
Circa 2nd Century A.D.
The woodland deity standing nude with his weight resting on his right leg, the left knee relaxed and supported by a tree stump, the torso with well defined musculature, a draped goat skin falling down the left side containing an abundance of fruit and pine cones, secured with the left hand, the drape roughly hewn at the back, 27½in (70cm) high, mounted

Literature:
Representations of the woodland god Silvanus became popular in the second century A.D. during the reign of Hadrian, when the cult of the youthful deity of agricultural fertility became associated with Antinous, a favourite of Hadrian.
