Two Egyptian quartzite relief fragments
New Kingdom, circa 1550-1075 B.C.
One a figural fragment of triangular form, showing the deceased and his wife in profile facing to the left, wearing long wigs with unguent cones on their heads, rows and columns of hieroglyphic text along the top and down the right hand side, part of a standard funerary wish for the deceased made to Re-Horakhty and Anubis asking for 'glory in heaven, might on the earth and brotherhood in the necropolis and accompanying Sokar', the deceased's name missing, his office connected with gold, the wife's name unintelligible, 13in x 6in (33cm x 15cm); the other a rectangular slab with ten columns of hieroglyphs containing a funerary text for an unknown male, with various standard wishes for his after-life enjoyment, including 'that his Ba might be with God, that he might see the face of heaven, that he might see Ra when he rises, that he might have enjoyment amongst those favoured by God, that his Ba might remain and not be rebuffed, that after old age he might enjoy the lifetime of a venerated one, that his mouth be opened, his eyes and ears unblocked, his head be attached, his heart given to him and he can take any form he desires', 15in x 12½ (38cm x 32cm) (2)
