An Attic black-figure column krater
Circa 530-500 B.C.
Enlivened with red and white slip, depicting on side (a) Herakles fighting the Nemean lion, his cloak, bow and quiver hanging on a tree in the background, the remains of an inscription above the figures; on side (b) Europa on the bull's back, holding a garland; both scenes framed by bands of ivy and tongues, the figure of Iolaos holding a club depicted under one handle and the draped figure of Athena under the other handle; the neck decorated on side (a) with a band of felines and goats, bands of ivy and lotus buds and two palmettes adorning the rim, a band of rays above the foot, 13¼in (34cm) high
