A rare Meissen beaker, circa 1721-22

Painted on one side with a chinoiserie scene depicting a seated figure turning a wheel within a gilt-edged quatrelobe cartouche enclosing Böttger lustre and edged with iron-red foliate scrollwork, the reverse with a mythical beast flanked by shells and coral and a bird and insects overhead, gilt band to footrim, 7.5cm high (gilding to inside rim rubbed off, two rim chips, haircrack)

A beaker from the same service with a chinoiserie scene on one side and a dragon on the reverse is in the Dr. Ernst Schneider Colletion, Schloss Lustheim, inv. no. ES 271 (A. Schommers / M. Grigat-Hunger, Meißener Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts (2004), no. 29). The chinoiserie scenes on this service belong to the earliest decoration developed by J.G. Höroldt; the seated figure with the spinning wheel is on pl. 3.
