A gold lacquer three-case inro

By Yamada Jokasai, 19th century
Of wide form, bearing a ground of formalised togidashi waves over usu-nashji, lacquered with a continuous design of a map of Japan, showing the provinces identified on small cartouches, and surrounding countries, in shades of gold togidashi, the top and base of kinji and the interior of nashiji with kinji edges, signed Jokasai; with an ebony and bone ojime incorporating a compass; and a two-part ivory manju delicately engraved in kebori with a similar map of Japan and surrounding countries, the reverse with a long inscription, signed Nanyo to. 7.9cm (3 1/8in).
