Crawhall's watercolours of animals and birds are some of the most celebrated in the Glasgow School canon. They are distinctive, succinct and display a surety of line which recalls Oriental calligraphy. Crawhall's knowledge of nature was extensive and his own standards exacting, despite being a prodigious sketcher.
