Footnotes

The clipper Ship Comet was built by William Webb of New York, launched in July 1851, to serve in the California Gold Rush Trade, primarily for carrying passengers and cargo to the west, and then onto China for the China trade. On a return voyage to New York, she set a 76 day record from San Francisco to New York that still stands for a sailing ship.

Comet made four voyages between New York to San Francisco, with times ranging from 103–128 days. Other ports of call included Whampoa, Hong Kong, Manila, Macao, Liverpool, and Bremen. She sailed out of London, England in the Australia trade, with voyages to Queenstown, Moreton Bay, and Brisbane.
