8vo (144 x 97 mm). [24], 12, [2], 13-160 pp. Errata leaf bound before p 13 (the start of the vocabulary). Double columns of Spanish and Othomi. Engraved frontispiece of St. Joseph bound after title. Old limp vellum. Custom vellum-backed slipcase. Title and frontispiece a bit worn and soiled including small marginal to title, some foxing, scattered small ink spots and minor repairs, repair on H1 affecting a few letters, later endpapers, vellum worn and soiled.
Provenance: Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate, her sale, Christie's New York, Feb 1, 1988, lot 251).

FIRST EDITION, DOHENY COPY. The Otomi language is still spoken by about 300,000 people, most of whom live in the Mexican states of Hidalgo (Valle de Mezquital), Mexico, Puebla, Querétaro, Tlaxcala, and Veracruz. "The author was first to establish a proper system of characters, which has since been retained" (Sabin 52413). Medina 5174l; Palau 190159 ("muy rara").
