MARBECK, JOHN. 1505–1585?
A Concordãce, that is to saie, a Worke wherein by the Ordre of the Letters of the A.B.C. ye maie Redely Finde any Worde Conteigned in the Whole Bible, so often as it is there Expressed or Mencioned.. London: Richard Grafton, July 1550.
Folio (275 x 180 mm). a6 A-3T6 'Ttt1' 3V6 [3X]1 (-a6 blank, [3X]1 leaf with woodcut of Henry VIII). Triple column, black letter. Title within woodcut architectural border with headpiece of a court scene, woodcut device on a6, initials, and "Seven Sciences" device at colophon. Period calf, rebacked. Custom chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. Wanting a blank and final leaf with woodcut, a handful of headlines shaved, early leaves grubby and with two or three wormholes, title with upper blank fore-corner torn away and small hole at gutter, final leaf lightly soiled overall, covers pock-marked.
Provenance: Arthur Vannell of County Wexford, Ireland (early ownership inscription on a4); Arthur Wilmer Lissauer (morocco booklabel).
FIRST EDITION of the first concordance in English to cover the whole Bible. Marbeck, Yorkshire-born, apparently became deeply interested in theology during the mid-1530s, "and when the English "Matthew" Bible appeared in 1537, he resolved to own a copy. Being unable to afford one, he began writing it out by hand, but later diverted his energies to the more useful enterprise of compiling a concordance to the same publication" (ODNB). A Catholic reaction to reform nearly cost him his life. Marbeck is also known for his Booke of Common Praier Noted. Rare; the present copy is the most complete to have sold in auction in the last thirty years. STC 17300.
