HARMER, SYLVAN.

Manuscript entitled, "Sylvan Harmer's Vocabulary of such words (selected from Walker's Pronouncing Dictionary, with some additional words) as were not sufficiently familiarized to his mind, either as to the Orthography, Pronunciation, or true Definition, &c. &c.-Augt. 1832." [Heathfield, Sussex, 1832.] 127 pp recto and verso, 8vo, in brown ink. Period half vellum. Paper covering lacking from lower cover, edges rubbed, else sound and attractive.
Provenance: Sylvan Harmer (bookplate inscribed "Heathfield").

Compilation of thousands of the more interesting words of the period, from "abactor" (one who steals cattle) to "zootomy" (dissection of the bodies of beasts). The owner would seem to be the Sylvan Harmer who was part of a family of Heathfield stonecutters and who was writing a history of the Parish of Heathfield at this period (edited and published in 1910 by Percival Lucas).
