TORRIANO, GIOVANNI, editor. Vocabolario Italiano & Inglese, a Dictionary Italian & English.... With severall Proverbs and Instructions for the Speedy Attaining to the Italian Tongue. [-Vocabolario Inglese & Italiano.] London: T. Warren [-T. Roycroft] for J. Martin et al, 1659.
2 parts in one volume. Folio (335 x 210 mm). a-b2 B-4B4; chi2 2a-u4 x-z2 22A-2G2 2H*2 2A*-2K*2. Triple column, ruled borders. Period paneled black morocco gilt, a.e.g. Possibly wanting portrait (see below), scattered foxing and spotting, lightly rubbed, spine faded, spine label beginning to lift.
Provenance: with Maggs, 1949 (pencil note on rear free endpaper); Alan Lubbock, likely the Royal Artillery Major [1897-1990] (bookplate).
An attractively-bound update of Florio's celebrated Worlde of Wordes, first published in 1598. Torriano's addition was "a dictionary English and Italian, which I have compiled by my owne industry" (Preface). ESTC calls for an engraved portrait, which is found only in a minority of institutional copies. Wing F1368.
