A Worlde of Wordes, or, Most copious, and exact dictionarie in Italian and English. London: printed by Arnold Hatfield for Edward Blount, 1598.
Small folio (233 x 163 mm). a6(-a1) b4 A-2P6 2Q4(-2Q4). Woodcut vignette on title, text in three columns. 19th-century speckled calf, rebacked, morocco spine label. Lacking first and last blanks, old faint dampstain throughout.
Provenance: Public Library of Cincinnati (discard stamp to verso of title).
FIRST EDITION of the first comprehensive Italian-English dictionary, an important work in exposing Elizabethan England to contemporary Italian language and culture. Florio shared a patron with Shakespeare in the Earl of Southampton, and Florio's works—including the present volume and his translation of the essays of Montaigne—are thought to have influenced the Bard's writings. Ebert 7661; Graesse II 603, STC (2nd ed) 11098.
