A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues. London: Adam Islip, 1611.
Folio (283 x 174 mm). [A]4 B-4N6. A1 and 4N4 blank. Double column. Folding table, title within woodcut borders, woodcut initials, head and tail pieces. Full period calf, six raised bands, gilt decoration in compartments, covers centered with decorative gilt lozenge. Soiling to endpapers and blanks, occasional period annotations in margins, short tear to margin of folding plate touching a few words in text, spine with small repairs, covers mildly scuffed.
Provenance: William Boswell (ownership signature and inscription dated July 1611 to first blank).
FIRST EDITION of "the most important dictionary of the French Renaissance" (Smalley The Sources of a Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues p 15). English statesman William Boswell's copy. Boswell served as ambassador at the Hague from 1632 to 1649; he was knighted in 1633. Allston XII 623; STC (2nd ed) 5830.
