An Alvearie or Quadruple Dictionarie, Containing Foure Sundrie Tongues: Namelie, English, Latine, Greeke, and French. London: Henry Denham, 1580.
Folio (280 x 185 mm). a8 b-y6 2a-3n6 3o4 4a-4s4 4t6 (-4t6, blank). Double column, black letter, roman and greek types. Title within elaborate woodcut pictorial border, historiated woodcut initials. Period London blindstamped calf, heraldic roll tool (Oldham HE.b.5: roll no 504). Scattered wormholes mostly at ends, several gatherings with patch of browning at lower margin, faint patches of browning to title, lacking final blank, wormholes to covers, rebacked and recornered, one clasp replaced.
Provenance: given by John Smith of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, to his fellow college-man Thomas Lorde (early ownership inscription on initial blank); Somerhill Library, seat of the Goldsmid banking family (bookplate); Sotheby's London, January 13, 1988, lot 317; with Blackwell's Bookshop.
Second enlarged edition of the third triple-dictionary in the English language, which was revised by the author shortly before his death to include Greek. Baret was a professor at Cambridge University. The work takes its title from the Latin for beehive, and, "[Baret] claims, was compiled from his and his students' notes by inverting the order to English-Latin; it is actually largely based on Thomas Cooper's Thesaurus, as well as Robert Stephanus's Dictionarium Latino-Gallicum" (ODNB). It is the first dictionary to refer to "hard words," laying the foundation for later monolingual English dictionaries. Dedicated to William Cecil, Lord Burghley, this edition includes additional dedications and elegies lamenting the author's recent death, including one by Mulcater. STC 1411.
