Suida. [In Latin and Greek.] Venice: Aldus Manutius, 1514.
Folio (340 x 220 mm). a-z8 &8 A-Z8 [Omega]8 AA8. Greek text, double column. Anchor and dolphin device on title and at end (leaf otherwise blank). 19th-century straight-grained red morocco gilt, spine gilt in 6 compartments with raised bands, turn-ins gilt with Greek key patter, all edges gilt. Repaired tear to a3 encroaching a few letters of text, repaired marginal tear at foot of B1, short wormhole to lower edge of first several leaves, pale toning to first and last pages, binding sunned at spine and top edge of cover.
Provenance: George John, Earl Spencer (morocco bookplate); Enriqueta Augustina Rylands; gift to the John Rylands Library, University of Manchester (gilt monogram to upper cover and engraved bookplate, small deaccession label to rear free endpaper; Rylands sale, Sotheby's April 14, 1988, lot 78).
SECOND EDITION, FIRST ALDINE EDITION, SPENCER-RYLANDS COPY. The first edition of the Suda was printed by Bissolo and Mangio in 1499 in Milan, (see previous lot) where they were forced to relocate after Aldus obtained the Venetian monopoly on the printing of hitherto unpublished Greek texts. Adams S2062; Renouard p 70.
