Folio (301 x 204 mm). A10 B-N8 010. Large woodcut on the first page showing the author and his translator writing (ambidextrously) at the same desk. Translated from Spanish to Sicilian by Cristóbal Escobar. Roman type; in 6 columns. Period limp vellum, spine lettered in manuscript. Scattered spotting to margins, corner dampstain to final third of text, front hinge cracked.
EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST SICILIAN VOCABULARY, comprising the Sicilian-Latin portion (the Latin-Sicilian half was published in 1520). The translator, Cristóbal Escobar, was Canon of Sicily and a pupil of Nebrija. He is depicted alongside the older Nebrija on the opening woodcut, in a book-cluttered study, and both writing ambidextrously. Palau X 189175 (locating only 3 copies).
