4to (217 x 168 mm). [1-244 (signed in Hebrew).] Hebrew type throughout. Woodcut printer's device at colophon. Period vellum. First and last leaves re-hinged, some pale dampstain, minor staining to vellum, overall attractive and well-margined.
FIRST EDITION of this etymology of 712 words from the Talmud and the Midrash, including definitions in Old Yiddish. Levita was once a proofreader for Daniel Bomberg in Venice. At the age of 70 he left his wife and children to move to the Bavarian town of Isny and supervise the Hebrew print shop of Paul Fagius, the only printer in town. Levita is renowned for his translation of the Bovo-Bukh, the first secular book to be printed in Yiddish. Adams E125.
