Teutsche Sprach und Weissheit. Thesaurus linguae et sapientiae Germanicae. Augsburg: David Franc, 1616.
Folio (338 x 222 mm). [12] pp; 1875 columns, [1] p. Double column, gothic, roman and Greek type. Title in woodcut border incorporating 6 portraits and a city view. Later vellum stamped in black. A very few gatherings browned, generally excellent.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST PART (ALL PUBLISHED), VERY RARE. Henisch, a native Slovakian, was city librarian for Augsburg and an important German humanist. This first volume (letters A-G) was all that appeared of his dictionary. Henisch died two years after this publication, in the same year as the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War. "The title-page ... is, indeed, a sad document when it is seen as that of a book published two years before the war broke out. It is partially framed with portraits of the Electors of the Holy Roman Empire; the Emperor Matthias is at the top center, and Friedrich, the Elector Palatine who would become Matthias enemy, next to him. Like the multiple dedications of the Thesaurus graecae linguae, this title-page suggests the irenic potential of lexicography, offering a dictionary for all German-speakers just before the war that would set one German-speaking community so bitterly against another..."
