Breviloquus vocabularius cum arte diphthongandi.... Cologne: [Heinrich Quentell], 1486.
Folio (280 x 200 mm). 304 leaves: a6 b-d10 e-y8 Y8 z8 A-K8 L-M6 [N6 O10]. Double column, gothic type. Rubricated throughout with initials and capital strokes in red, 2 15-line initials in blue and a few small initials in blue. 19th century pigskin blind-ruled in antique style, all edges gilt. Light soiling and tiny corner repair to title page, small stain to lower gutter at end, small corner repair to r2, binding lightly rubbed.
Provenance: very few instances of early marginalia; Manuel Cervantes (bookplate); anonymous owners, Christie's, Mar 10, 1976, lot 126; and Sotheby's, May 28, 1986, lot 29.
The address to the reader is by Johannes Amerbach. Other contributions are by Guarinus Veronensis (letter addressed to Valerius Florus) and Guilelmus Fichetus (De arte punctandi, entitled "Compendiosus de arte punctandi dialogus"). LOVELY. BMC I 271; Copinger 6290; Goff R162; GW M37913.
