Cornucopiae linguae latinae. Venice: Paganinus de Paganinis, May 14, 1489.
Folio (305 x 200 mm). 373 leaves (of 374, lacking final blank): a8 b10 2a-b8 c-z8 &8 98 ‡8 A-R8 S6 T6 (-T6). Sidenotes in both inner and outer margins. Gothic letter with occasional Greek type. 2a3 with incipit printed in red and 13-line initial B supplied in pale blue on red foliate ground with full-length trailing penwork border, smaller 5-line initial M on preceding leaf. 18th century Italian vellum, covers gilt with narrow double-helix foliate border and small central armorial device, spine with raised bands and gilt in compartments. Occasional light foxing, heavier to several leaves, finger-soiling to early leaves, light waterstain to fore-edge of first and last few leaves, a1 with palm-sized repaired loss to lower fore-corner, gutter strengthened, and pasted-over ownership inscription, neatly repaired tear in y5 reaching into text, slight chipping to head and foot of spine.
Provenance: armorial supralibros of Pope Pius VI; Edward Davenport (bookplate); Alma and William Petersen (bookplate).
EDITIO PRINCEPS of the Archbishop of Sipontum's magnum opus on the Latin language: "a fearfully prolix commentary on a portion of Martial, the text being used chiefly as a peg whereon to hang an undigested mass of learning, of which the principal use was to furnish succeeding lexicographers with a considerable part of their materials" (London Quarterly Review, no 193, July 1855, p 237). Perottus' innovation was to quote passages of the classics in support of his explanations. BMC V 455; Goff P288; HC H 12697*.
