MELBER, JOHANNES, AND JODOCHUS EICHMANN.

Vocabularius praedicantium, sive Variloquus. Strasbourg: Johann Prüss, 1488.
4to (176 x 116 mm). 171 leaves (of 172): A8 (-A1 title) B-E8 F-G6 H-N8 O-P6 Q-S8 T-V6 X-Z8. Gothic type. Initials rubricated in red and silver, initial strokes and paragraph marks in red. 19th-century brown morocco, raised bands, spine titles and coat of arms in gilt. Lacking title leaf, final leaf mounted, leaves numbered in early hand in red ink, a few margins repaired, some staining throughout but overall clean.
Provenance: period annotations in margins; Royal Society (ink stamp to A2, gilt stamped device to spine; sold at Sotheby's May 4, 1925); Walter Goldwater (woodcut bookplate).

ROYAL SOCIETY COPY. Melber's popular German-Latin dictionary, compiled with the assistance of Eichmann, was first printed in Speyer c.1477. ABPC records only two copies of this 1488 Prüss edition appearing at auction in the past 25 years. BMC I 122 (IA 1644); HC 11041*; GW M22730.
