Vocabularius juris utriusque. Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, September 4, 1481.
Folio (298 x 204 mm). 112 leaves: [1]8 [2]-[17]6 [18]8. First and final leaves are blank. Double column. First gathering rubricated including 16-line zoomorphic opening initial. Modern calf blind-stamped in antique style with older brass clasps. First blank trimmed at outer margin, minor spotting at ends.
Provenance: Franciscan ownership inscription at head of incipit leaf; anonymous owner, Sotheby's New York, June 13, 1991, lot 147.
Attractive, well-margined copy of this anonymous law dictionary printed in Koberger's heyday. The text is an authoritative collection of terms taken from legal texts dating from the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries; the editio princeps was around 1473, and the last edition over 200 years later, around 1618 (Tarlton Law Library, Law Dictionary Collection, online exhibition). Some manuscripts attribute the compilation to Jodocus, a jurist at Erfurt University. See lot 1085 for another incunable edition, bound with a later work.
