AL-AKHTARI. MUSTAFA IBN SHAMS AL-DIN 'ALI AL-QARISARI. 16th cent.

Arabic manuscript on paper, Lughat-i Akhtari-yi Kabir. [Ottoman Empire, 18th century?]
284 leaves recto and verso, tall 4to, 35 lines of black naskhi script, rubricated headings, first 2 pp ruled in gilt, first page with headpiece of gold, blue, red, white and green. Modern morocco preserving earlier sides. Custom slipcase. P 1 laid down with margins cut away, final leaf likewise with loss to two or three letters, p 2 fore-margin supplied and edges repaired, approximately a sixth of text waterstained at upper fore-corner.

An Arabic-Turkish dictionary. Al-Akhtari served at the court of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, and in his preamble he cites as sources al-Sihah, al-Dustur, al-Takmilah, al-Mujmil, al-Mughrib, al-Taqdimah, and other standard works of Arabic lexicography.
