LEAVES— ETYMOLOGIAE.

ISIDORE OF SEVILLE. c.560-636. Latin manuscript on vellum, from Isidore's Etymologiae. [France, second half of 12th century.] 2 leaves recto and verso, 2 columns of 39 lines, early gothic script, brown ink, 320 x 225 mm), headings and initials in red, lightly ruled with plummet. Few period annotations in margins, first line slightly shaved, light wear from use as wrapper.

Isidore's great medieval encyclopedia, now known as Etymologies, or the Origins of Words, made him "the chief authority of the Middle Ages, and the presence of his book in every monastic, cathedral and college library was a main factor in perpetuating the state of knowledge and the modes of thought of the late-Roman world" (PMM 9).
