LITERATURE
J. Duncalfe, Carlos Nadal 1917-1998, An English Perspective, Harrogate, 2010 (illustrated p.260).
This work is sold with a photo-certificate of authenticity from Le Comité Nadal.
Chambre jaune combines, with typical energy, a number of motifs often found in Nadal's work. The armoire to the right, for example, appears a number of times in his interior scenes, and here the mirrored door reflects the back of the artist's easel, bringing him in as a silent presence in the carefully balanced composition. The view through an open door is also a common trope, although with added significance since the view of a quiet bay with a distant village running up to the steeple of a church is made to contrast with the picture hung to the left showing a busy port with skyscrapers above the belching smokestacks of two freighters. This scene, perhaps New York, is familiar from a number of Nadal's other works (J. Duncalfe, op. cit., pp.145-149).
