Edo Period, 17th century
Of cylindrical form and supported on a short, circular foot, each tier decorated with three rectangular, lobed panels enclosing different landscape and kacho-ga scenes, lacquered in gold hiramakie and takamakie, including an owl perched on pine branches, thatched buildings set within rocky islets and a flock of sparrows flying above a line suspended with naruko (bird scarers), all reserved on a nashiji hexagonal-patterned ground, with details inlaid in mother-of-pearl, the cover similarly lacquered with a pagoda set among rockwork, the interior of plain red lacquer, unsigned. 18.7cm (7 5/16in) high, 11cm (4 5/16in) diam.
