Provenance: purchased at Hotel Drouot, Paris, 1995.
Wrangham collection, no.2071.
The Chinese archer, Li Guang (Riko), believing that a tiger was threatening him, shot an arrow into it and, upon dismounting, found that the 'tiger' was in fact a large stone.
The design is taken from an illustration in the woodblock-printed book, Ehon Jikishiho, vol.4, illustrated by Tachibana Morikuni and published in 1745. A similar design is introduced in a Jokasai-design album owned by Eskenazi Ltd., London.
