Each side with a shaped panel, one carved in relief with a poet and attendant in an open boat in the shelter of an overhanging cliff, the other with a poet seated before a tsuitate, decorated with a tiger and bamboo, on a verandah while an attendant pours water into a river, the top and base carved with scrolls in guri-bori and the interior of black lacquer, signed Shonai ju Murakami Chusei with kao; with red lacquer ojime carved with a dragon, signed Chusei with kao. 7.9cm (3 1/8in).

The figure in the boat may represent the Chinese poet Li Peh (Rihaku) who, when crossing a river, leaned over the side of his boat to see the reflection of the moon, fell overboard and was drowned.
