Footnotes

烏帽子に菊図蒔絵螺鈿貼付彫金印籠 銘「五十嵐道甫(花押)」 18世紀

Provenance: W. L. Behrens collection, no.1804.
R. Harari collection, purchased at Sotheby's, London, 1974.

Published: E. A. Wrangham, The Index of Inro Artists, p. 46, Doho III, Igarashi, right.

The eboshi and the three characters, oisenu (老せぬ) shown on the inro alludes to the poet and poem by Kino Tsurayuki (active 868-945) in the anthology, Kokin Wakashu.

The poem transcribes:

露ながら/ をりてかざさむ / 菊の花 /
おいせぬ秋の / ひさしかるべく

And reads: Tsuyu nagara / orite kazasamu / kiku no hana /
oisenu aki no / hisashi karu beku

And translates:

Chrysanthemums in Autumn
While they shine
I'll wear them in my hair
For sooner than the flowers
Will come my ending.
