The design is taken from a woodblock-printed book, Korin Hyakuzu, by Sakai Hoitsu, first published in 1815, and also appears in a painting by Ogata Kenzan from the series Junikagetsu Kacho zu (Birds and Flowers of the 12 month). The design is emblematic of the month of January.
